Improving what children eat was discussed alongside the provision of school meals when World Food Programme representatives met Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on 24 August 2026.

The Temple Trees meeting examined continued cooperation with the government on nutrition programmes. WFP representatives expressed readiness to work with national institutions and other partners.

The Prime Minister described a broader approach that included healthier eating habits, nutritional awareness and preventive health. She also referred to interventions for identified schools and families, together with work at early-childhood level.

Participants discussed the contribution universities and research institutions could make. The emphasis was on understanding nutritional problems and using evidence to shape decisions.

Non-communicable diseases were raised as a related concern, but the meeting was a policy discussion rather than an announcement of a new medical treatment.

The talks reaffirmed an existing partnership and identified areas for stronger coordination across education, research and nutrition services.
