More than 100 local-government projects were scheduled to begin on 14 August 2026 under a programme designed to strengthen councils’ own income sources.
The Punarudaya Purawara initiative carried Rs. 2.5 billion in performance-based capital grants. Its approved activities included commercial premises, agricultural facilities, tourism services, solar systems and vehicle-related infrastructure.
The selection process considered feasibility, the revenue position of each institution and its previous performance. Projects were also assessed against the ability to recover investment within five years.
Launch events were announced for Madurankuliya in Puttalam and Angunakolapelessa in Hambantota, involving the minister and deputy minister responsible for local government.
The programme combined community facilities with a financial objective: improving the capacity of local institutions to generate income. The August announcement described the planned rollout and funding allocation; it did not report final construction results or the revenue later earned.
