Battery installations at 16 transmission substations were approaching completion in an official progress update issued on 10 August 2026.
The systems were designed to retain surplus solar electricity during daylight hours and deliver it to the grid when demand required it at night. Each project was described as capable of supplying 10 megawatts.
The update placed construction near Anuradhapura Substation at 85 per cent completion and identified early September as the expected connection period. That was a timetable given at the time, rather than confirmation of subsequent commissioning.
Control was assigned to National System Operator Ltd., with maintenance to remain with the respective project companies. Procurement was also under way for battery systems at another 23 substations.
The stated objective was to strengthen grid stability and reduce reliance on diesel generation during evening peaks. Any consumer benefit was presented as an expected outcome of the programme.
