Children’s learning received a prominent place in Batticaloa’s new public library, which opened on 20 May 2026 with a separate unit devoted to science and technology.
The Municipal Council building was formally opened by former parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The library’s official website was launched at the same event.
Completion of the project brought an unfinished development into public use. During the ceremony, the President referred to its earlier delays and spoke about the importance of sustaining the community’s reading culture.
The opening also included a tour of the building and discussions with Municipal Council staff. Mayor K. Sivam Packiyanathan presented a commemorative memento, and a sapling was planted on the premises.
The addition of a children’s science unit gives the new facility a learning focus alongside its role as a public library.
