Sri Lanka has commenced a diplomatic process for the extradition of the underworld leader Makandure Madush and others arrested in a Dubai hotel on Tuesday.
The Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs are to take measures at ministerial level to bring the suspects to the country, the police Special Task Force (STF) Commandant Senior DIG MR Latheef said.
Makandure Madush was arrested with 20 others including several other organized criminals and a famous singer at a party held at a hotel in Dubai.
A large quantity of drugs was recovered from the suspects in the joint operation by the Dubai Police and Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities, Khaleej Times reported.
Madush, who is among Sri Lanka’s most wanted criminals, had been evading arrest for the past couple of years.
Among the 20 suspects arrested was reportedly a visitor carrying a diplomatic passport and popular singer Amal Perera.
The suspects were reportedly interrogated after the arrest and are currently being detained in a prison in Dubai. Blood samples have also been taken from the suspects, reports said.
