Two novice events which will target attracting new entrants to Motorsports will be held this year, turning a new page in the country’s motor racing history. The two competitions were launched at the Hutch Sri Lanka Super Series Launch which was held at the Dimo 800 auditorium Wednesday (21st).
For the first time in Sri Lanka, two Rookie cup events for both cars and motor cycles are to be introduced titled ‘The McLaren Formula Rookies Cup for Novice Drivers’ and ‘Honda One Make Series for Rookie Riders’. The two rookie formula events will be held at the Katukurunda, Pannala race tracks and the rookie bike events are set to be held at the Mirigama circuit as a part of the Sri Lanka Super Series which will be organized by Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) in Partnership with Asian Motor Racing Club (AMRC). This is a great initiative by all involved parties as it will be a grand step taken towards the development and the expansion of motor sports in the country.
Speaking to the media at the launch of the Hutch Sri Lanka Super Series as well as the two novice competitions, Dinesh Jayawardane, President of AMRC and Managing Director at Mobil Lubricants, who have come forward as the main sponsor of the event had this to say.
The Honda One Make Series for Rookie Riders will be powered by Stafford Motor Co Pvt Ltd, who are the main distributor of Honda two wheelers in the country and will be an interesting competition. The competition will be held in two categories with the Honda CBR 250cc expected to attract the more experienced riders while the Honda Hornet 160 will be opened to anyone who will want to take on the sport.
