NO WORD FROM PRESIDENT ON ARMY COMMANDER

The Presidential Secretariat were quiet on the impending retirement of the Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake as of Friday evening when we went to press.

There was some expectation amongst defence circles that President Sirisena who is the Commander in Chief, would extend Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake’s term by one more year. In the event that happens the President is also expected to extend the term of office of the Chief of Defence Services Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne.

In the event that President Sirisena decides not to extend the Army Commanders term, it is expected that his successor will be Major General Shavendra Silva the current Chief of Staff and former diplomat.

In the course of events, it is possible that Mahesh Senanayake will end up as the new CDS replacing Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne who will take up retirement.
