Female university student arrested for ragging

A senior female student of the Peradeniya University has been arrested for ragging three other female students at the university.

The three freshmen students who have been assaulted by the senior student, are receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Hospital, local media reported.

The assault had taken place on the night of November 22nd at the Sangamitta hostel of the University.

The students have complained to the police station at the hospital after they were hospitalized.

Accordingly, police have arrested the suspected senior student following investigation. She is a final year student of the Arts Faculty. The suspect is to be produced before the Kandy Magistrate today.

Under the Prohibition of Ragging and Other Forms of Violence in Educational Institutions Act No. 20 of 1998 the ragging is a distinct and punishable offence by law.

If the ragging leads to sexual harassment or grievous hurt, it is a non-bailable offence and the punishment is increased to ten years’ imprisonment.
